I started this Monday coming into my office, and just getting to work. I’m starting to finally feel like I’ve got a grasp of what my job is and what I need done. There’s still an imbalance between the fact that I am only in this position for a year and so I hear the clock ticking loudly, but I also need to take time to learn the details of what I’m doing and where the job needs to go.
But in the short time I’ve been an Americorps VISTA, I’ve been doing a lot of networking, and I have had a wide-range of activities. One of the most interesting has been meeting with a board planning on working on redesigning a middleschool to create a community campus, and it was exciting to suddenly be part of that discussion. I also met with a teacher who is working to provide options for the Pacific Islander community, which is something I’m personally passionate about.
