Black Sheep

In America we have an expression “So-and-so is a black sheep.” Urban Dictionary gives the following definition:

Term used to describe someone who feels left out in a family. Basically, the outcast of the family because they choose to do other things than live up to their parents’ standards.

my sisters are so successful. one is a doctor, the other is an engineer but I’m the black sheep. my parents hate me sometimes because I get pretty bad grades. 😦

Growing up in the country while loving the city and traveling, I’ve always thought of myself as a black sheep. But here’s where the metaphor gets interesting: sheep have been bred to be white since white fur is easier to dye than its darker counterparts. On its own, the white color opens sheep up to more predation. Before human intervention, the ancestors of modern sheep would have likely mostly all been black sheep, the more natural coloration.
