Yesterday on the way to work there were 4 male turkeys crossing the road. Their feathers were ruffled and I can only imagine the amount of adrenaline coursing through their bodies. Thankfully the traffic stopped and they made it to the other side unscathed. But it really makes me think about how little land there is left for nature, and the animals who have million+ year histories of migration are really running out of options.
One thing I’ve seen experimented with in Europe is the concept of overpasses for animals. A way for animals to get from one side of a road to the other without getting flattened in the processes. Thankfully, a similar program is starting up in my neck of the woods as well. This can only be a good thing and far more civic money should be put into projects like this around the world.
