Roots

I found this excellent record of Alex Haley talking about how the book Roots came to be, and it’s definitely worth a listen. It’s a really powerful story, and the portion where he described Malcolm X is worth of its own two-record LP. The story arc as a whole though is fantastic, and the bit where he ends up in Africa with the descendants of Kunta Kinte’s clan–his clan–is definitely a tear-jerker. I would love to see this as a movie. Perhaps starring LeVar Burton as Haley…? I think it’s time for me to revisit Roots, seeing that I’ve not seen it since middle school and have never read the book. It’s time.
