Gilgamesh Seized from Hobby Lobby

Hobby Lobby, full-time 2b pencil sales, part-time art thieves, funders of ISIS terrorists, and supporters of Christian Sharia Law, are at it again. This time, authorities have seized a tablet containing part of the Dream Sequence from the Epic of Gilgamesh–you know: the oldest preserved written human story…ever.

Watching the looting of irreplaceable items in Iraq’s National Museum was one of the most painful things I ever saw, particularly since it was one of the most preventable disasters ever. More than half the stolen items have never been recovered. Mesopotamia, known to Christians as the Garden of Eden and to historians as the cradle of civilization was where humanity first developed agriculture and all the trappings that came with it. That moment in time was the single most important thing that ever happened to our species and changed every single element of our society from religion, gender, economics, politics, storytelling, and was the moment the concept of ownership came into being. We cannot underestimate how much our planetary cultural history is embedded in the archeology of Iraq.

Unfortunately, the Republicans lead an invasion of Iraq–which was supported by many Democrats including Diane Feinstein, Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer, Maria Cantwell, John Edwards, John Kerry, and one 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden. During the invasion, the museum fell to opportunist looters, and a large amount of items fell under control of ISIS which they sell to rich bastards like the Hobby Lobby President Steve Green who then keep them out of the public eye, often in private museums. While some organizations such as National Geographic have had a more responsible debate on the need to preserve artifacts that are falling apart such as The Gospel of Judas which they did end up purchasing and would have been an absolute loss to humanity if it had disintegrated, Hobby Lobby has demonstrated a total lack of such concern.

We need to do what we can to get these artifacts back where they belong: in a museum, in Iraq (and don’t get me started on materials the erstwhile British Empire stole and spread around the world…). In large part this means hard jail time for the CEOs who can pay the slap-on-the-wrist fines dished out for them.
